Media: Mulan is actually based on a legendary figure from ancient China, first mentioned in the poem Ballad of Mulan. Beside the Disney version there are various stage and film productions.

I liked this film version from 2009 [Youtube, Chinese with English subtitles]. Fair warning though: this is way harsher than the Disney version. Obvsly. It falls more on the original The Little Mermaid by Andersen side than on the Ariel side of the Happy Ending spectrum :D:

Yeeeaaaaah, Mulan is super kickass in the live action movie but omg, so many deaths + sad ending, there might have been a tear or 20 :D:

Alas that the other version is blocked in my country. Although, perhaps that's the universe's way of sparing me a sad ending?
